We work with three approaches that allow us to successfully assess documents from different perspectives. If one path is impassable or an access point is blocked, we use the next to arrive at a legally admissible result. The disciplines used to pursue these three paths or approaches are linguistics, psychology, and criminology.

To grasp the individuality of an author, it is not enough to analyze their text solely on the classical levels of analysis. The various sub-disciplines of linguistics must also be utilized: error linguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, and especially psycholinguistics, which has many overlaps with the psychology of language. This also provides access to psychology.

Language profiling utilizes linguistics as well as methods and techniques from motivational and perceptual psychology. Unlike other approaches, our focus is not on texts that are relevant to evidence, but rather on the authors behind these texts – with their individual style and their entire personality. This is especially true for our credibility analyses.

The content of anonymous letters often fulfills one or more criminal offenses. Consequently, the sequence of events and actions must also be reconstructed and assessed from a criminalistic perspective. Therefore, we consider authorship identification to be a related discipline to handwriting analysis and speaker recognition within forensic science (Drommel, Speech Profiling, p. 45).
